Sprint HTC EVO vs Samsung Epic 4G

After owning the HTC EVO for about 1.5 months and just getting the Samsung Epic since Tuesday, I’m writing this writeup from my perspective. The major difference between the phone is the physical keyboard and the Super AMOLED screen on the Epic. Interestingly, the Epic with keyboard is only couple millimeters thicker than the EVO, however is also lighter than the EVO.

The EVO’s HTC SenseUI is definitely better UI right out of the box. But after a day of searching for widgets and apps, I have got the Epic back to where the EVO started out of the box.

The one impressive thing right out of the box, is the Samsung Epic’s beautiful 4.0″ display. Side by side with the EVO and Epic, the EVO seems to have a washed out white look to it. The Epic displays colors vibrantly and crispy.

For input the keyboard on the Epic comes in handy, but the Swype works even better than the HTC on screen keyboard. Although I got very use to tap typing on the HTC interface, its not a big deal. With that response, its a matter of preference if you like a physical keyboard or not, but considering the Epic only a couple mm thicker, I like the Epic.

From the picture’s I have taken so far, the EVO seems to win on the color over the Epic. Both have flashes, and if your too close to the subject, the picture becomes washed out.

Overall, both phone’s are amazing. Have 1ghz processors, but the Epic seems snappier. The touch screen seems lil over sensitive on the Epic. But the big winner for me is the Epic’s Super AMOLED screen. As of right now, I’m leaning towards keeping the Epic.

HTC EVO 4G

  • Actually fairly small for the large screen
  • HTC Sense UI is better and more intuitive

Con

  • Heavier
  • Screen color is not as brilliant

Samsung Epic 4G
Pro

  • Super AMOLED screen has amazing colors
  • Physical keyboard
  • Actually lighter

Con

  • TouchWiz 3 is not as good as Sense UI
  • Missing built-in applications, like Stock and some others that EVO has built-in.

Top Android Apps

So I’ve had Sprint HTC EVO since July and I just picked up Sprint Samsung Epic 4G. Here’s just some recommended apps/widgets that I have been using and like

Beautiful Widgets – Awesome. Since Epic does not have the HTC Sense UI, BW adds the clock/weather widget, which I really missed.

JustPictures! – For EVO, this was a must have. It allowed me to view Picasa and Facebook photo albums easily. But for Epic, the built in Gallery is every better.
